News from Kent County Council Liberal DemocratsWed 10th Sep 2008: POOREST FAMILIES MUST WAIT FOR FREE BUSES As recession bites, Kent's children from poorest families are being prevented from using free buses under Kent County Council's Freedom Pass. Wed 13th Aug 2008: "At a risk of saying I TOLD YOU SO" Dan Daley, Councillor for Maidstone Central today responded to the quite remarkable statements made by Councillor Ferrin (Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste) concerning the repeated breakdowns and operational failures of the Allington Incinerator. Mr Ferrin is quoted as saying what seemed a very wise decision a very long a very long time ago is a very stupid one today. Tue 24th Jun 2008: Failure of furnace linings at the Waste to Energy Incinerator at Allington meant another plant shut down of the burning process, a mountain of rotting rubbish and a plague of flies for local residents. Tue 3rd Jun 2008: PHASE 1: 23MILLION PASSENGERS A YEAR! Lib Dems at Kent County Council have pledged their opposition to London Mayor Boris Johnson's campaign for a new London Airport in the Thames Gateway area. Tue 29th Apr 2008: CABINET MEMBER TAKES A CLOSER LOOK! At the KCC Cabinet Scrutiny Committee (April 23rd) the Cabinet Member for Finance, Nick Chard, was quizzed over the county's apparent threat to community services supplied from premises occupied by the Allington Baptist Church in London Road, Maidstone. Thu 17th Apr 2008: KCC LAND SALE THREATENS COMMUNITY SERVICES Maidstone community services and a thriving church are at serious risk. The site they occupy will be sold by Kent County Council (KCC) once the planning prospect for the site is established. Fri 11th Apr 2008: ITS NOT CONSULTATION, ITS DICTATION KCC Members have asked officers to think again about the closure of the QEF Bridge Court Centre for people with a physically disability. This followed action by Liberal Democrat spokesman for Adult Services George Koowaree who called in the decision to close the centre for further discussion by KCCs Cabinet Scrutiny Committee. GURKHAS 1ST CLASS SOLDIERS, 2ND CLASS CITIZENS AND 3RD CLASS PENSIONERS It is a national disgrace Gurkhas, Nepalese soldiers, who served in the British Army before 1997 are not being treated with the respect and honour they deserve. Denied full pension rights, denied the right to British Citizenship and facing deportation. Purna Gurung, 55 who served as a Gurkha in the British Army for 15 years (1971 - 1986) is to be deported. Fri 14th Mar 2008: Lib Dem Leader Clegg - Kingsnorth is a "monstrosity" Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has spoken out against the government's short-sighted plans for a new generation of coal-fired power stations, calling the recent Kingsnorth proposal a "monstrosity". Thu 13th Mar 2008: KENT DRAINS A MAJOR FLOOD THREAT At a special County Council meeting on Thursday 13th of March Lib Dem Councillors questioned the commitment of both KCC and the government to tackling one of the major flooding threats in Kent. Wed 5th Mar 2008: MAIDSTONE - KENT'S ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT Local Lib Dem Cllr Ian Chittenden has called for urgent action to deal with the rapid increase of deaths on Maidstone Communities roads resulting in the highest number of deaths and injuries in Kent in 2007. Mon 3rd Mar 2008: Trudy Dean, Lib Dem Group Leader at Kent County Council is calling on KCC to come clean about the dealings of its own 'arms length' companies. She has criticised KCC's refusal to answer Freedom of Information questions about the activities of these companies, and asked for details of any 'hidden' deals which might cut private businesses out of the loop. Mon 25th Feb 2008: LIB DEM BUDGET FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN Liberal Democrat Budget proposals at last week's Kent County Council meeting (19 February 2008) included plans to spend more on education projects. Tue 19th Feb 2008: ELDERLY PEOPLE TO PAY MORE, DISABLED PEOPLE TO LOSE THEIR CENTRE During the Debate on the Adult Social Service and Health budget, at the Kent County Council meeting on the 19 February 2008, George Koowaree, Liberal Democrat Portfolio Holder spoke of his concerns regarding the domiciliary charging policy and the loss of frontline provision in the County Council's budget for next year. 300 YEARS LIFECYCLE FOR PIPES AND GULLIES!
