Ballot papers at election count

The Government has laid before Parliament a draft of an Order which if Parliament approves it, would move the date of local elections in 2009 from Thursday 7 May to Thursday 4 June, the date of the European Parliamentary elections - Local Elections (Ordinary Day of Elections in 2009) Order 2008.

The decision to lay a draft Order which will move the date of the local elections has been made following consideration of all representations received in consulting on the move. The Government has published a document summarising the responses received and setting out their response to consultees representations, available at www.communities.gov.uk/publications/localgovernment/movingelections2009.

It is now for both Houses of Parliament to consider the draft Order. The Order must be approved and made by 7 November 2008 if the date of the 2009 local elections is to be moved.
