Commenting on today's immigration tribunal hearing on whether retired Gurkhas should be allowed to settle in the UK, Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg said:

"It is a national disgrace that Gurkhas who have loyally served Britain are being denied the right to live here in retirement.

"These men have been a credit to the country. To deny them the right to live here and gain British citizenship after years of service and distinguished conduct is nothing short of scandalous.

"If someone is prepared to die for our country they should have the right to live in our country.

"The hearing has now been adjourned until July, but in the meantime it is essential that pressure is kept up on the Government to ensure that retired Gurkhas receive the treatment they deserve."
