Shepway Lib Dems "Serious Geek Genius"4.44.10pm GMT Fri 27th Jul 2007
Well known Shepway Lib Dem campaigners Darren Briddock and Miranda Roberts have had some of their exploits at the recent Ealing Southall by-election written up in this weeks Liberal Democrat News. Both were key members of the Ealing team dedicating many days to the campaign - in which the Lib Dems slashed the Labour majority and the Tories remained in a humiliating third place - but the write-up came for their work after the polls closed. As the Liberal Democrat News "People" column explains: "The army of helpers in both by-elections have good reason to pat themselves on the back. Activists in both HQs worked incredibly hard and the results showed what a great campaigning party we are. "On polling night in Ealing, many exhausted keyed-up helpers went off to the Town Hall to wait for the declaration. Those who stayed at HQ had been loaned a TV by local activist Jon Ball to watch as the result came through. The TV 'just needed tuning in' he said. The only problem was that the remote control had gone walk-about! "Miranda Roberts and Darren Briddock of Shepway were determined that the HQ activists should be able to watch the declaration, so they scoured the HQ building for a way to watch or hear it. "They pulled out some broken hi-fis and laptops that they assembled to pick up the programme on-line. But the sound wasn't nearly loud enough, so they hit the novel approach of hooking a laptop up to the speaker system in Darren's car, which they backed into the HQ warehouse entrance. The team were then able to watch Nigel's result and his excellent BBC interview as it happened. "How's that for a serious geek genius?" Lib Dem News only fail to mention that Darren's car is, fittingly, a green car as it has been converted to use LPG - real Lib Dem environmental action! Well done to Darren and Miranda - and the other TWENTY Lib Dems from Shepway that made the trip to Ealing Southall and helped in our campaign there.
